The Alumni Internship Program provides college-age AFA alumni with a paid job opportunity in the field of arts management. Each summer alumni interns work with the executive staff managing the day-to-day operations of the Summer Music Conservatory. It’s a unique training and learning opportunity for students to gain insight and experience into the non-profit business model and K-12 education.
In addition to administrative duties, interns may also be asked to coach student chamber music groups, to perform with student and faculty groups as needed, and to assist academic departments in curriculum implementation. Regularly scheduled classes with our executive staff help interns develop administrative, marketing and fundraising skills. Interns apply what they learn to implement a series of special projects in support of AFA, thereby gaining important practical business experience.
As former students, interns are in a unique position to mentor and assist current students as role models. Interns are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, teamwork and show a willingness to participate whenever needed. The Alumni Internship Program is neither a playing residency, nor is it an office job. Interns can expect to perform a wide variety of tasks and take part in many aspects of administration, production, marketing, fundraising and operations.
