A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
With the goal of providing the finest music education experiences for youth in Southeast Texas, we use a four-faceted approach as the foundation for every program we offer.
- Musical Development – pitch, rhythm, instrumental technique, individual performance
- Musical Knowledge -theory, history, performance practice, making musical decisions based on knowledge
- Academic Knowledge – how music relates to math, science, foreign languages, history and physical education
- Personal Development – teamwork, self-confidence, public speaking, leadership, aesthetic judgment
This model is reflected in the AFA curriculum by providing four key experiences that help students grow.
- One-on-one instruction (private lessons, master classes, coaching, tutoring) that build self respect and tangible technical achievement
- Small ensemble experiences (chamber music, chamber choir) that strengthen leadership and communication skills and foster self-motivation.
- Large ensemble experiences (orchestra, choir) that promote teamwork, discipline, respect for others and understanding one’s place in a larger context
- Classroom musicianship (music theory, history and related classes) that empower students to make choices through increased knowledge.
As students have opportunities to perform, their learning is reflected outward to AFA’s audiences and the community as a whole.
- Audience Education – enhancing musical knowledge and appreciation for the arts
- Community Awareness – building value for the role of the arts in K-12 education
