About AFA
AFA enriches the lives of all people through music. We accomplish this mission by:
- Creating programs in nurturing learning environments and fostering a sense of belonging for people from all backgrounds and cultures
- Making music a vehicle for social, personal, intellectual, and emotional growth through creative opportunities and innovative collaborations
- Maintaining a collective of distinguished Teaching Artists who reflect the communities we serve
Each season, AFA serves over 2,000 young musicians, offers over 40,000 hours of classroom instruction, and presents nearly 50 free performances throughout the greater Houston metro area. AFA’s work in our community is divided into three main program areas:
Summer Music Festival
AFA’s flagship program, the Summer Music Festival offers intensive, challenging, multi-week experiences for composers, instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists.
Ensembles & Instruction
The AFA Chamber Music Academy and Composition Studies programs offer unique learning opportunities from September through May.
Engage AFA
Engage AFA programs enhance school curricula and impact potentially underserved communities through innovative, customized programming.
AFA is funded in part by grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance. AFA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The official health care provider of AFA is Houston Methodist Hospital’s Center for Performing Arts Medicine.
