How to Become an AFA Student

The AFA Summer Music Festival, Chamber Music Academy, and Composition Studies programs have a four part process that includes an application and audition or interview ahead of the start of each program. This helps us get to know each other and find the best path for you at AFA. Anyone interested in being a part of one of these programs should follow the process below. School-based and community partnership programs do not require an application using this process.

Questions?

Applicants who need assistance of any kind including account creation and/or language differences should contact AFA Sr. Director of Programs Amanda Heathco at AmandaH@afatexas.org or 713-522-9699.

Step 1.
AFA DASHBOARD ACCOUNT

AFA uses an online system (the AFA Dashboard) to manage family and student information, applications, enrollment forms, and tuition payments. Prospective students and their families start by creating their account, which will remain in the system throughout their time with AFA.

Step 2.
APPLICATION

Applications are open for specific windows of time ahead of program session dates as follows:

  • January through mid-April: Summer Music Festival
  • End of July through end of August: Fall Chamber Music Academy, Fall Composition Studies
  • End of November through end of December: Spring Chamber Music Academy, Spring Composition Studies

The AFA application itself is intended to help us learn more about you and includes questions about music experience and background. It includes audition scheduling as well as the opportunity to apply for tuition assistance.

There is no fee to apply to any AFA program. Applications must be completed in order to move ahead in the process.

Step 3.
audition

You will submit audition day and time preferences during the application and you will be emailed a confirmation with audition details within 1 week. Auditions are held to assess the applicant’s readiness for the program they are interested in; information about guidelines for auditions can be found on the AFA Audition page.

Step 4.
ADMISSION & ENROLLMENT

After your audition, an admission decision will be sent via email. If accepted to an AFA program, instructions about next steps (including tuition assistance and payment information) will follow. Required enrollment forms and tuition payments are made through the AFA Dashboard.
