Joanna Reeder-Mbasogo

Summer Music Festival: Piano Arts Intensive Piano

Joanna Reeder-Mbasogo, NCTM, is a pianist and music educator based in Houston, Texas. She received her masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston, studying with Nancy Weems and Dr. Courtney Crappell. A native of North Carolina, she earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Furman University in South Carolina, where she studied under Dr. Ruby Morgan and Dr. David Gross. Additional influential teachers include Sandra Shen (Brevard Music Center) and Alessandro Tricomi (Arezzo, Italy).

An active performer and collaborative musician, Joanna has given numerous solo and collaborative recitals She has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Furman Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras, and Union Symphony Orchestra. Joanna is the recipient of the Hirsch Memorial Scholarship Endowment, the Sigma Alpha Iota collegiate honor award, and is a member of the national music honors society, Pi Kappa Lambda. Joanna has presented her pedagogical and musical research at the local, state, and national levels, including the Texas Music Teachers Association Annual Convention and the Graduate Association of Musicologists and Theorists student conference.

A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, Joanna has enjoyed faculty member positions at the University of Houston, Lone Star College-University Park, and St. John’s School. In addition to teaching private lessons, she loves directing and teaching piano camps, group-piano courses, and arts-outreach initiatives. Committed to facilitating lifelong learning, she has taught early childhood music as a certified Musikgarten instructor and Recreational Music Making classes for adult students.

An active member of the Houston teaching community, Joanna serves as Vice President of the Forum Music Teachers Association and as a Division Editor on the Texas Music Teachers Association Theory team.

When not busy teaching or practicing or volunteering, you may find Joanna traveling with her husband, visiting family, cooking, reading in a coffee shop, or on a run in Buffalo Bayou park.
