AFA Alumni Spotlight: William Phi

William Phi is no stranger to AFA. He attended AFA as a high school student in Summer 2015 for the HS Symphony Orchestra (flute) and HS Choir sessions, and in Summer 2017 for the HS Choir session. In addition to being only an AFA Alumni Intern in 2021 and a faculty artist for the Winds and Brass Session in 2022, he also served as the Festival Operations Manager and a Music Theory Instructor.

William is currently the Assistant Band Director at Elkins High School in Fort Bend ISD.

How were you introduced to music?

I was first introduced to music in elementary school, where I found my love for music through singing, playing the recorder, and listening to a variety of music.

Do you have any favorite composers?

My favorite composers are Mozart and Tchaikovsky.

Is there anything you learned as an AFA student that you have carried into what you are doing now?

AFA taught me the value of seeking new experiences & connecting with others through music. Prior to coming to AFA, all I had ever really known (musically) was what I did in MS/HS band. Meeting so many new people who have different backgrounds and working with them in new contexts (chamber music, orchestra/choir concerts, performances at Houston Methodist) was an incredible and eye-opening experience. As a teacher, I hope that I can provide my students with those sorts of fulfilling, memorable experiences in our time together.

What do you enjoy most about teaching and performing?

I enjoy getting to build relationships and growing alongside my students, colleagues, and the community. I especially enjoy those moments after performances where everyone is taking pictures, talking about/taking pride in the performance, and just taking a moment to enjoy each others’ company… even when it goes really late!

What would be your advice to a young musician thinking about a career in the arts?

ENJOY THE PROCESS! It is so easy to get wrapped up in the technicalities, criticism, and competitiveness that is involved in music. This is supposed to be fun! Find those little things that spark joy for you, and lean into that as you venture toward your next performance.

What are you most excited about this school year?

With this being my first year at Elkins, I am excited to make a lot of great memories with my students. We have a very busy but fun semester ahead of us, and I’m going to make sure I take my own advice and enjoy the process!
