Penny Meitz
Summer Music Festival: Orchestra & Chamber Music Workshop Conductor
Penny Meitz retired as Orchestra Director and Strings Teacher at St. John’s School in May, 2024, where she held the Mary Wood Neuhaus Chair in Music. In August, 2024, she began teaching at the University of Houston as Adjunct Professor in String Methods. Ms. Meitz was named Orchestra Director of the Year by the Texas Orchestra Directors Association in 2023. Including her years at UH, Ms. Meitz has taught for a total of 51 years. She is a violist, formerly with the Houston Ballet Orchestra and Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, and she continues to perform as a freelance musician. Ms. Meitz received her training at the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. She is a member of American String Teachers Association, American Viola Society, Mu Omicron, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, and Texas Music Educators Association. Ms. Meitz is a past Orchestra Division Vice President of TMEA and has served on the boards of both TODA and TexASTA.
