Chamber Music Academy
September 7 - November 23 and January 25 - April 12
Brass, Piano, Strings, Woodwind
Fall, Spring
The AFA Chamber Music Academy, now entering its 15th season, provides a unique opportunity for young musicians to deepen their experience and skills as a musician in a supportive, growth-oriented environment. The experience of rehearsing and performing in small, customized ensembles under the guidance of an AFA Teaching Artist helps develop teamwork and communication skills, gives students a boost of confidence, and enhances their musical knowledge and ability.
Applications for the Fall session of the Chamber Music Academy (September 7 – November 23) open August 1; applications for the Spring session (January 25 – April 12), open in late November. All students will join us for a placement audition, scheduled during the application process; these placement auditions allow us to place each student into an appropriate chamber music group (see the Program FAQ section for more details).
program details
What is chamber music?
Chamber music ensembles are typically groups of 3-6 players who play music written specifically for that type of group. A string quartet (2 violins, viola, and cello) is a typical example of chamber music.
How is this different from an orchestra or band?
In a larger ensemble like orchestra or band, there are typically multiple players of the same instrument playing the same part; in chamber music ensembles, each member of the group has a part that is specific to them/their instrument.
What kind of students are you looking for? Is it hard to get in?
Any instrumental student who is a strong music-reader, has at least 2 years of playing experience (3 years for piano), and is motivated to grow as a musician is welcome to audition and will be considered for a placement in a group. Students are matched into group based on their age/grade and current skill level as well as rehearsal availability. Participation in other music instruction such as private or group lessons and/or other ensembles is not required but is encouraged.
How does this work and how is the session set up?
Once placement auditions are over, our team will work to form groups, assigning each group a rehearsal session and a Teaching Artist (there are two rehearsal times each Saturday that you will choose from during the application process). Families will receive placement information and will be asked to confirm their participation, and enrollment will follow ahead of the session start. Chamber groups stay together for the entire Fall/Spring session.
What happens every week?
Each week typically starts with a student gathering for activities such as team-building, special guests, or presentations on topics relevant to chamber music. Then, each group goes to their own rehearsal space to work with their Teaching Artist on their music. Students are expected to learn and practice their music on their own time outside of their time with their group.
Are there performances?
Every session concludes with a recital featuring all chamber music groups. In addition, each session features outreach performance opportunities. In previous seasons, this included performances before Houston Symphony concerts at Jones Hall, as the featured performing group at Bayou Bend Collection’s Family Days, AFA’s own Bayou City Duck Race, and more!
What are the expectations for participating students?
Chamber Music Academy students are expected to: attend their assigned rehearsal for the full time each week and the session-end recital (outreach performances will be assigned based on availability); learn their parts outside of Saturday rehearsal time so they are prepared to rehearse with their group; actively participate in the group both musically and otherwise during rehearsals and group gatherings.
